Prospect Tournament Reviews
So many tournaments, so many prospects that we can’t cover everyone, so we stick to the games we managed to watch and talk about the players that stood out. From the Traverse city Tournament one of our favorite prospects Alex DeBrincat (70%) was doing Alex DeBrincat things, like scoring the OT tournament game-winning goal.
From the Penticton Tournament the players Paul and Peter focus on include NCAA free agent signees Spencer Foo (45% Fantrax Owned), and Joe Gambardella (6%). We also discuss some defensemen in Tucker Poolman (10%), Ethan Bear (33%), Ziyat Paigin (10%).
Pre-season Preview
The pre-season has begun and we watched the Vegas Golden Knights first real game and there were several impressions from that game. Who is Tyler Wong (14%)? We give you a good background on Wong who had a monster game scoring the Knights first hat-trick and added a beauty assist. Tomas Hyka (5%) also made a strong impression in the game and could be a potential sleeper pick. On the Canucks side, Brock Boeser (80%) showed he is NHL ready and worthy of all the hype and lip service we have given him, he was dominant. Peter also speaks about Jake Virtanen (47%) and how his profile needs a market adjustment and how you can take advantage of that in your fantasy league. Looking forward we discuss potential line combinations and opportunities some prospects will be getting, look for the following lines in training camp for Zach Aston-Reese (44%), Alex Kerfoot (26%), and Jake Debrusk (35%)
Zach Aston Reese – Evgeni Malkin – Phil Kessel
Alex Kerfoot – Nathan MacKinnon- Mikko Rantanen
Jake Debrusk – David Krejci – David Pastrnak
Interview with Ryan Wagman from McKeen's Hockey
Ryan Wagman from McKeen's Hockey joins us for his third appearance on the show and reviews his formula he and his scouting team at McKeen's apply to scoring and ranking prospects, and the extended coverage of prospects in their yearbook. If you want to buy the yearbook (PDF only) or subscribe to McKeen's you can do so here.
Ryan gives us his early Calder candidates and some rookies who could be in the conversation;
(sorted by Fantrax Average Draft Position (ADP)

Nico Hischier - 92% - 160 ADP
Kyle Connor - 73% - 163 ADP
Clayton Keller - 87% - 184 ADP

Brock Boeser - 80% - 269 ADP
Thomas Chabot - 81% - 200 ADP
Mathew Barzal - 75% - No ADP
Alex DeBrincat - 70% - No ADP
Ryan also answers an interesting question about Olli Juolevi and Mikhail Sergachev.
Mikhail Sergachev - 77% - 351 ADP
Olli Juolevi - 65% - No ADP

Eastern Teams
In the first segment Paul talks Washington Capitals and how shallow they are on the wings. Potential prospects that could find a roster spot discussed include: Jakub Vrana, Riley Barber and Tyler Graovac. Which defenseman has the better chance of making the Caps roster and which one has the better fantasy value between Madison Bowey and Christian Djoos?
Then Peter gives you five forwards to look at in a variety of leagues. This is the year Oliver Bjorkstrand makes a fantasy impact. It may not come until next year, but look for 2016 third overall pick Pierre-Luc Dubois to make the Columbus roster this year. Prospect Vitali Abramov will be going back to junior but he has elite offensive potential and should compete for a CHL scoring title, at 64% Fantrax ownership, Abramov will be well worth the wait. Two more depth prospects that can contribute in bottom six roles to look at are Tyler Motte and Markus Hannikainen.
Western Teams
We saved one of the two final western teams for the interview leaving Paul to talk Montreal Canadiens prospects. Two prospects looking to make the Habs discussed are Nikita Scherbak, and Charles Hudon. Paul also answers Peters question; are Jacob De La Rose and Daniel Carr heading towards bust label? There are not many roster jobs available on the Habs blue line but Jakub Jerabek is probably at the top of the list.
That leaves Nashville for Peter and again it’s all forwards. Pontus Aberg may be a great sleeper pick after he had a breakout AHL season and some roster spots are up for grabs. Vladislav Kamenev is the teams top prospect, but he likely has one more year of AHL before he breaks the Preds top six. Two good depth roster option in Nashville discussed are Fred Gaudreau and Miikka Salomaki. Looking long term and some players for you to watch as they make their AHL debuts this year are Samuel Girard, Fred Allard, Yakov Trenin, Victor Ejdsell, and Tyler Moy.
Interview with Hayden Soboleski
Senior member and Associate Editor from DobberProspects Hayden Soboleski joins the show from the west coast to talk Colorado Avalanche prospects. What will Tyson Jost's impact be in his first full pro season? How long away is Cale Makar, and what is his upside? Two forward prospects discussed that may make the roster sooner than later and their fantasy value discussed are JT Compher and AJ Greer. Two defensemen to keep an eye on are Nicholas Meloche and Chris Bigras.

Update and Announcement:
Today as we record episode 31 our thoughts are with Dobber as today is his day zero as he receives his stem cell donation and as his doctors describe it, he is “reborn”. This is obviously a very important step in his battle with cancer and we are thinking of him today. Episode 31 is dedicated to Darryl Dobbs as we support him in the fight for his life in any way we can.
As our Twitter followers already know, we are pleased to announce we have launched a Patreon page. For those of you unfamiliar with Patreon it basically is a subscription page. We are looking into adding more pledge tiers and if you have a request or suggestion as to what you would enjoy as a perk let us know.
As for the CHL fantasy leagues, the host site will be OfficePools as they are the only provider to offer WHL, OHL, and QMJHL fantasy hosting and while it is not yet open it looks like it will only be box pools. Picking players from a group. By pledging as a late round sleeper you can play in any, or all of these leagues and compete with Peter and Paul and our other listeners. Updates on standings will be available on OfficePools and we will be updating results on episodes as well. Don’t miss out on an opportunity to play Junior Fantasy Hockey!

Now on with the show!
Eastern Teams
This week Peter handles the East starting with the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Pens have the worst prospect pool in the NHL so it was kind of tough finding too many players to talk about. Tristan Jarry, Derrick Pouliot, Zach Aston-Reese, and Adam Johnson are who we talk about.
The New Jersey Devils have far more fantasy relevant players starting with top prospect Nico Hischier, and newly signed free agent Will Butcher. Other players discussed are John Quenneville, Miles Wood, and Mirco Mueller (Pete doesn’t know how to pronounce his first name)
Western Teams
Paul takes a look at two teams in the West, starting with the St. Louis Blues and a number of players that have duel position eligibility. Top prospects Ivan Barbashev and Tage Thompson are poised to make the roster this year and have a high upside. Other prospects that will play but in a lower role discussed are Dmitrij Jaskin and Zach Sanford. On defense Paul looks at two players that could play significant time in Jake Walman and Jordan Schmaltz.
The Arizona Coyotes are a prospect rich team. We all know all about Clayton Keller who is already widely owned across Fantrax leagues, so Paul looks at more available players in Dylan Strome, Christian Fischer, Brendan Perlini and Nick Cousins. On defense two bubble players Paul sheds some light on are Kyle Wood and Kevin Connauton.
Interview with Tyler Madarasz
Tyler Madarasz from Sirius XM NHL Network Radio joins the guys to discuss the Ottawa Senators prospects. Tyler shares his insights on Thomas Chabot who is poised to make the NHL and how impactful he thinks the Sens top prospect can be as a rookie. Colin White is the Sens top prospect and Madarasz believes after playing both in the NHL and AHL at the end of the season last year the Sens will play him in the NHL. Logan Brown had a season of hits and misses, not making the US WJC team and playing only 35 games, but scored 40 points and won the Memorial Cup; is he a player trending down since his draft or is he a must own prospect still? How will goalie Marcus Hogberg fair in his first full season in the AHL with the Belleville Sens? Can Filip Chlapik translate QMJHL scoring to the AHL? And who is the Sens Rookie camp invitee Pius Suter and can he win a contract?
Listen to Tyler on Sirius XM talking hockey each night on Face-off with Jim Gordon setting you up for each night’s games and any fantasy tips you need to know. Starting goalies, injuries, line combos, who’s hot and the news of the day.

Eastern Teams
Paul ranks the Sabres trio trying to break into the NHL and brings to light a European import player who could open some eyes early.
