DPR Episode 84: Joe Meloni of CNH on top NCAA Signings
Monday Apr 13, 2020
Monday Apr 13, 2020
It seems each year the NCAA keeps producing more and more and better prospects. The NCAA has become quite a feeder league for the NHL and Fantasy Hockey. This year has a weak class of free agent prospects, but a strong crop of drafted players.
Joe Meloni from CHN joins the show for another long episode and we discuss a lot of players you need to know or own in your fantasy leagues.
First up is the free agent class. As mentioned it is not outstanding, but there are some quality prospects.
Marc Michaelis (VAN)
Connor Mackey (CGY)
Brinson Pasichnuk (SNJ)
Jack Achan (BOS)
Alec Rauhausser (FLA)
Mitchell Chaffee (MIN)
And a player Pete didn't catch that Joe says is the best of the bunch...Drew O'Connor (PIT)
We didn't get to talk about all the players we wanted to but drafted and turning pro prospects we discuss include

We assume you already know all about the likes of Trevor Zegras, Alex Turcotte, K'Andre Miller, and Tyler Madden, so we dedicated our time to the lesser know but still fantasy relevant players.

Jokke rejoins the podcast to help shed some light on this years crop of free agent talents potentially signing in the NHL, top prospects crossing the pond, and of course, draft eligible prospects.
First up is Top players coming tot he NHL. Kirill Kaprizov may be the best player outside the NHL and his highly anticipated NHL debut seems to be on the horizon. Is he going to have an impact like Artemi Panarin, or Vadim Shipachoyv?
Jokke has an even better comparison.
Is Alex Romanov going to be worth the hype? Is he the Habs next franchise defenseman?
Ilya Sorokin looks to be coming to North America. Will the NY Islanders prospect have the same type of immediate impact as Igor Shestorkin had with the Rangers?
Other prospects expected to play somewhere in North America covered include: Nils Lundkvist (NYR), Samuel Fagemo (LAK), Grigori Denisenko (FLA), Jesse Ylonen (MTL), Arttu Ruostalainen (BUF), Tim Berni (CBJ), and Andrei Altybarmakyan (CHI).
Prospects that may take a little longer that were also briefly touched on include Nils Hoglander (VAN), Dominik Bokk (CR), Justus Annunen (COL), and Mattias Macelli (ARI)
Free Agents coming to North America are always a tempting fantasy hockey add, and sometimes they pay dividends. This years crop is underwhelming but includes...
Alex Barabanov - Recently signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Don't expect similar upside as last years find in Ilya Mikhayev.
Mikko Lehtonen may be the jewel of the bunch, if he is in fact a free agent. Jokke explains more on that.
Julius Nattinen, previously an Anaheim prospect has rediscovered his game in Europe and may be headed back to North America.
Artyom Zub, links have him potentially headed to the Ottawa Senators.
Johannes Kinnvall, and Eemeli Suomi (Captian Finland) wrap up this segment.
2020 European draft prospects are all players Pete wanted to learn more about and include Shakir Mukhamadullin, Alex Pashin, Kasper Simontaival, Helge Grans, Noel Gunler, Zion Nybeck and Germans Stutzle and Peterka.
Jokke brings the good stuff for this episode, enjoy and thanks for listening!

DPR Episode 80: Fantasy Hockey Rebuilding and Ottawa Senators Top Ten Prospects
Thursday Jan 23, 2020
Thursday Jan 23, 2020
If you need to rebuild your fantasy hockey team, this episode is about the strategy options you want to use.
1. Scorched Earth: (2-3 years) - Your team is a dumpster fire! You have no quality long term assets, sell everything for draft picks, prospects and futures
* Owning your own draft picks is essential - Don't get stuck in "Futures mode". If you have been rebuilding for five years its not a rebuild, you just suck.
2. Rebuild: (1-2 years) - Two to five players that are the core of your roster and should be valuable for the next five years. Look to fill holes in targeted and identified weakness or opportunities. Sell off players 30+ years old for futures, or trade 50 point players for 60 point players that are injured for season (Dougie Hamilton)
3. Retool: (1 year) - Good team having bad year, bad luck. Sell two or three players for great futures to make next year or next few years even better. One step back, two steps forward.
Three ways to acquire players:
1. Trade: Target opportunities to acquire players that will help you in future and for teams that can use what you have to offer. Trade can be risky, you have to give to get and in a rebuild you are offering established payers for prospects or picks that may not pan out. Trading a 80 point player that is 30 for a prospect that does not pan out can be devastating. Try to get multiple assets in return to ensure you have some long term value
2. Draft: Target blue-chip prospects in the early draft, even if the wait time is up to five years. Mid round look at either boom or bust prospects, or players with a short ETA such as free agents from NCAA or Europe or over age draftees.
3. Free Agent or Waiver Wire: Best time to acquire top assets here is early in the season as players have breakout performances, exceed expectations etc. Requires some homework but well worth it if you catch wind of this seasons breakout rookies before the competition.
Top NHL Rookies to target in trade:
Cody Glass VGK
Vitali Kravtson NYR

The Ottawa Senators are a NHL model example of how to rebuild. They have traded star players like Erik Karlsson, Mark Stone and Matt Duchene for futures and now have a bright future and two lottery first round picks. Peter reviews the top ten prospects and ten more since they are so deep.
1. Erik Brannstrom
